For me, travel has
always been a unique way of learning about the world. Venturing
outside of my comfort zone and into different countries and
cultures has been difficult at times, but afterwards I always
feel a bit wiser (or at least more aware of how unwise I was
before). As much as any formal schooling, these non-formal
learning experiences have changed the way I think about communication,
politics, culture, and history - not to mention food!
Fortunately, I've had the privilege of being able to travel
quite a bit. Starting several years ago, I began to document
these experiences on paper and film, and later on blog and
memory chip. To the left are some of my favorite photos. I
don't consider myself much of a photographer, but I do enjoy
taking pictures, and occasionally they turn out ok. Hopefully,
these photos communicate some sense of the people and places
they depict. At the least, they reflect my experiences of
being in these places.
Although my older travel journals
are now stowed away, the last travel blog is still online.
is
it travel? collects various actions, reflections,
and questions from the year that Renate and I spent in Latin
America, in 2004 and 2005. The blog posts don't necessarily
reflect my current thoughts, but they do illustrate how some
of those thoughts developed. Regardless, if you're going to
one of the countries we wrote about, you might find some interesting
travel tips. Comments and questions are very welcome!
